Hello World! Welcome Friends! Happy New Year! I seriously cannot believe we are in 2018! As you all know, with the New Year comes new plans and ideas for the house. One of those plans is to replace the tile in the downstairs with wood flooring. Of course with any plan comes an extensive search to see what the pros and cons are for wood flooring.
To my readers, it’s no secret that I love wood flooring. The beautiful wood floors throughout the formal areas, family room and master bedroom were one of the reasons we chose our current house. When we moved in we knew that we would want to extend the wood flooring into the kitchen area and back hallway. Having never shopped or installed wood flooring, I thought it would be good to make a list of all of the benefits of wood flooring. Here is my rundown of items to consider before adding wood flooring for your home:
1. Easy Maintenance
Wood flooring has endured the test of time. When Greg and I toured the Victorian mansions in Galveston last year, the one thing they all had in common was gorgeous, original wood flooring. These homes are over 100 years old and the floors looked amazing! Hardwood flooring will last if cared for properly. All that is required is regular sweeping and cleaning with a wood floor cleaner. Caring for our hardwood floors is one of the easier tasks in our home.
2. Many Plank Sizes Available
With some time spent on Pinterest, you will notice there are many plank sizes of wood flooring to choose from. The options are really quite amazing, and you can get a custom look with varying widths. Once you have decided on plank size, the next question is do you want one width or random widths? It’s all up to you in how customized you want your space to look.
You wouldn’t think that hardwood floors are versatile, but they actually do well with different types of design aesthetics. Wood flooring works with traditional decor as well as modern. This is where stain colors come into play. Wood flooring can be sanded and stained to suit the home owner’s taste. When your style changes, you can change the look of your hardwood floors. Do you want a sleek modern look or do you lean more on the traditional side? The perfect shade of stain can help you achieve the rustic cabin look or the coastal vibe. Whatever your taste, there is a stain that can make your decor dream come true.
4. Cost that Adds Value
There is no mistaking that putting wood floors in your home can be costly. However, having bought and sold 4 homes, my homes that had hardwood flooring fetched a higher price than the ones with carpet and tile. Hardwood flooring is a desirable feature that when added to your home will add great value upon the resale of the home. Plus, it just plain looks pretty!
5. Needs Refinishing
Over time, hardwood flooring gets scratched, worn, scuffed and the finish will dull. Refinishing floors can be a daunting task, but it is much more beneficial to refinish quality wood flooring than to replace. This would also be the perfect time to change the color of the stain if your decor tastes have changed. If you are taking on this project, be sure to choose the right power tools to do the sanding as well as a protective kit. Your protective kit will comprise of earplugs, goggles, gloves, and a decent respirator. Be prepared, it’s going to get messy.
6. A Quality Home
Having hardwood flooring in your home puts your home in a different category for the purposes of resale. Buyers are willing to pay more for a home that has hardwood flooring as opposed to carpet and tile. Homes that have hardwood flooring sell quicker than homes with carpeting or tile. So, if selling your home in the future is going to be an option for you, I would strongly encourage you to take a serious look at adding hardwood flooring to your home.
I would love to hear about your experience with hardwood flooring. Leave me a comment below to get the conversation started.
